New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, traveled to Portugal to serve as an artist-in-residence at a luxury Islamic wellness retreat organized by Women Sanctuary, a group that has previously called to “abolish” Israel and posted messages calling for the “liberation of Palestine.”
The five-night retreat was held at Paço da Glória, an 18th-century property in northern Portugal, where Duwaji participated in a program centered on Islamic spirituality, Arabic calligraphy, and creative workshops. Private accommodation cost more than $5,200 for five nights, with shared rooms costing roughly $4,300.
Women Sanctuary previously posted: “Abolish the colonial apartheid state of Israel. Free Palestine.” The organization has also used the phrase “from the river to the sea” and published a prayer asking Allah for the “liberation of Palestine” and to cleanse it of its “oppressors.”
Duwaji has worked with Women Sanctuary before, previously serving as an artist-in-residence at one of the organization’s retreats in Mallorca, Spain.
