The self interested human will believe anything it needs to if it helps their own position even when that’s to admit if they don’t demand truth in all things then who else will?
And if no one does how does this go well?
It can’t
It won’t
And it’s all of us to do the work
As we know it’s all we can do
If no one else does then why does that make your effort wasted?
It doesn’t
But the audience will say it is.
To do the right thing demands no care for the audience and their views
1. Power and consent
Neither familiar economic system is a sustainable order by itself. Both operate as machines for accumulating power. When people must sell their time to survive, they stop choosing as agents whose values track their own lives. They accept work, products, and rules they would refuse if refusal did not threaten survival.
The decisive line is free consent.
As soon as some can be compelled to do what they would not otherwise accept, concentrated power becomes possible and then has to protect itself.
Compulsion—not “the market” or “the state” as labels—is the original move.
2. History as story, not liberation
Church and Crown were coercion first. Magna Carta was armed men near the king securing their own take, not a gift of rights to everyone. Mass voting was less a right seized from below than enrollment into a system the enrolled still cannot steer. Laws then multiply to serve power. Official milestones are stories that make the arrangement look like consent.
3. The present arrangement
Resources, energy, communication, and knowledge sit inside private legal forms that are hard to map. States run on debt paper and on supplies they do not fully control. Products increasingly address secondary effects and manufactured wants rather than needs people would name for themselves. Information feeds shape what is thinkable, so speech and work feel less like the person’s own. People often do not notice that the world is not what they take it to be, because the capacity to attend has been conditioned away.
Left and right economic answers look like opposition while they share the same ground: capital and property rights treated as if they were natural law. That is the trick. Those rights do not create anything people could not create under other ways of deciding what to spend time on. People make things; capital scales a particular order and then life has to fit that order. Cities exploded as rural populations were pushed off land that law now allowed to be used for profit alone. The system is not at risk so long as the argument stays inside those two sides.
4. Technology as platform, not just product
Large information and energy systems are dual-use whether or not that is advertised. Work on driverless movement trains general competence at acting in an open, changing world. Public clumsy robots keep expectations low.
Computation that recalls and produces data is not intelligence.
Intelligence as a lived act
Intelligence is not a thing anyone possesses.
It is how a life attends. Attention never takes in the whole field.
A person chooses a focus; meaning comes from triangulating that focus against what surrounds it. What each person receives is therefore irreducibly particular. New ideas appear when new inputs shift that triangulation, not when a single stored input is replayed.
A computer does not choose a living focus and does not inhabit a surround that can injure or correct it, so it cannot generate understanding the way a person does.
5. Time, solitude, and wasted attention
You never leave the now. Memories and imagined scenes are not a past and a future you inhabit. Time as a dimension you move through is an invented frame someone else supplied. Once the future is treated as a place you can go to, know, and control, attention leaves the present and is spent on imagined paths treated as real. That is a conditioned misuse of the same faculty that, used in the now, is intelligence.
Attention is what the system needs you not to notice, because it is the opening of the mind’s potential. Endless diversions are supplied so it is wasted. That is why cave, wilderness, and desert appear as places of transformation: alone, in dead space, the mind speaks, and what it speaks has value. In ordinary life that speech is buried under everything already known as “truth.” Dichotomies (including the two economic sides) look like thought while they keep that overlay in place.
Convergence of thought = control
