eth zurich and anthropic published a terrifying paper proving that "practical anonymity" on the internet is officially dead.
they built a fully autonomous ai pipeline that takes your pseudonymous posts, extracts your identity signals, searches the web, and figures out exactly who you are. no human investigator needed.
the numbers are actually mindblowing..
- 67% of hacker news users identified correctly
- when the system makes a guess, it is right 90% of the time
- it even unmasked scientists whose interview transcripts were explicitly redacted for privacy
the scariest part? even time doesn't protect you.. they tested users who took a full year break and changed their interests. the ai still matched their old and new profiles with 90% precision. it sees through your persona changes like they aren't even there.
there is no defense against this. the agent splits the work into tiny, benign tasks like "summarizing a profile" or "ranking candidates." no api safety guardrail is going to flag it because no single step looks malicious..
every throwaway account. every "nobody will connect this to me" comment. it’s all just searchable micro-data now.

I am obviously influenced by a lot of science fiction. I don’t think that’s a criticism or anything. I delight in expanding in other’s ideas and I’m comfortable with the idea that everything is derivative of everything else anyway. I don’t mind arriving here from first principles, it means others have thought like this before and that comforts me.
I just believe in the capacity for greatness in humanity, and also our ability to adapt, shift, and overcome adversity. Times will be hard. They are always hard. Times will be confusing. They are always confusing.
The only thing we must not do is lose hope that better tomorrows are possible, and that we can spend today on making them so.

I did start by saying the problem was that it freaks people out. I'm not sure what I expected to happen here, but I'm somehow surprised by the amount of people who are freaked out.
Nevertheless, as an admittedly radical believer in bodily autonomy, I'm equally freaked out by the number of people who wish to stop me from making a choice they wouldn't make for themselves because of their own morality.
I find that sort of prescriptive morality strange and somewhat suffocating. I'm not saying that everyone should do this! I'm saying that I believe this can happen, can be possible, and I sure would find relief in it. I would never say that everyone should do it, or that it should be forced!
It is quite fun to me to see where the scissors in humans lie. The politics of the next 100 years will be so incomprehensible, so strangely split. I'm excited and terrified by some of the upcoming organizational shifts in society. Our bedfellows will become much stranger.
