B/c - I would argue the Lindsay Clancy jury/media story, and the Western Mass bar story are both the same core story. The New England psyche is unstable—it’s intrinsically status anxious, obsessed with in-group/out-group dynamics, and slews towards establishment-forming behavior and inculcates hate towards dissenters and outsiders.
Both the Clancy jurors and the Western Mass. bar crazies evince this Lord of the Flies-style manifestation of the above, and the stories have been such rare national phenomena (Mass. is not in the national consciousness so our news rarely goes big) because Americans simply cannot believe their eyes or understand why or how we are this crazy. It’s completely foreign.
