This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes break traffic laws while riding, yet 66% of people do so when driving. And if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid forbes.com/sites/carltonreid…

STUDY: Researchers found almost all road users broke the law, but while motorists mostly broke road rules to save time, the most common reason for people on bikes was personal safety. And yet bike-riders get more scorn & scrutiny for it. Via @CarltonReid forbes.com/sites/carltonreid…

I was run over by a minivan that rolled right through a stop sign. From my bed in the emergency room, the cop assumed I had run the stop sign, since “all bicyclists are scofflaws.” Luckily, the driver admitted he didn’t stop.

It is sometimes safer for cyclists to break the traffic laws …..

Wonder if cyclists in Canada & US stop at red lights (I don’t tend to 😅) - the study in the article (which was conducted in Denmark) found that bikers there do All that considered, I’m still 100% supportive of investing in better biking infrastructure. It’s smart urban design
Cyklister er IKKE lovløse banditter. Under 5% overtræder færdselsloven. Færrest bryder loven i kbh+øvrige store byer. Tak til @vejdirektoratet f vigtig fakta i den ofte skingre debat om 🚲adfærd. #pedalkraft #cykelglæde @YaelBassan @SikkerTrafik @cykelmama politiken.dk/indland/art7185…

My favorite part about this tweet is that you're providing empirical, data driven evidence of the opposite that many anti-bikers claim. And then they handwave it away anyway because, "Well in my experience". The best part about data is that you don't get to disagree with it :).

That's hilarious, it's probably 90% of both cyclists and drivers in London UK

It depends on the location (city). I always watch for riders and I have avoided hitting more than a few in bike friendly cities. Both bikes and cars need to pay attention and infrastructure needs to be built to accommodate all.

All road rules are meant to limit the noise and danger of autos. Movement of bikes and pedestrians are a none issue.

Cyclist also kill and injure far fewer people.
20
Yes, more infrastructure! But cyclists break the laws constantly wherever I've lived, red or blue state. You're naive.
92
I’d hazard a guess if you remove speeding this situation would be reversed. And the only reason cyclists don’t speed as because they can’t.

This certainly does not apply to New York City.

traffic laws are fake laws. stop harassing and extorting nonviolent ppl.
19
You can easily fine drivers for most of those things using cctv, just needs some effort put to it. If that was done then other things could get dealt with by officers on the streets.

Govt collects a lot of revenue from scofflaw drivers, seems like a perverse incentive to keep streets designed to induce scofflaw driving.

It's quasi impossible to not break the law, with any transport modus.

Garbage Bicyclists are reckless and a danger to walkers and pull dangerous moves is traffic

I got a ticket for running a stop sign on a bike in 1987 in Stillwater Oklahoma. It was $10. I refused to pay it and was served by the Stillwater police. don’t like your local laws, vote the assholes who make the law out of office. Bike laws are not universal.

Unfortunately, it's illegal for me to put up a camera and prove you wrong ...

No thanks. I prefer if there were no bikes on the road at all.

Having ridden for years in London I have observed that 2 or 3 cars go through on red at every single busy junction every single time. No surprise here.
18
I’ve found bike riders abroad to be far more observant re rules of the road than in the US. Locally, stop signs, red lights, and cross walks for pedestrians are routinely ignored by bikers. Car drivers behave only marginally better. It comes down to enforcement, or lack thereof.

This is interesting. Feels intuitively right.

In my city we have problems with bike riders on sidewalks. One almost hit me today.
137
Hahaha I know without even opening this that it isn’t from Vancouver

Just buy a car and get an off-road bike, problem solved.
22
I mean this is obviously not true. No one fully stops at every stop sign, driver or biker.

That study is bs. I see cyclists breaking the lights all day long and cycling down the one way street all day. Who cares. Stop the comparisons. Studies can tell you whatever you want to here.

Replying to @BrentToderian
This contradicts the anecdotal observations of so many people (including me)...so I'd need more evidence before accepting the study's conclusions.

I would like to see a study of how many car drivers vs cyclists are sanctimonious tossers.

Probably because there aren’t much traffic laws for bikes😂
