The famous "Marlboro Marine" photo of Lance Cpl. James Blake on November 9, 2004, in the middle of the Second Battle of Fallujah.
Los Angeles Times photographer Luis Sinco raised his camera and caught the 20-year-old Marine leaning against a wall with a cigarette hanging from his mouth.
Miller, of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, had spent the night pinned down under fire, with blood running from his ear and the bridge of his nose, dirt and paint smeared across his face, and momentarily deaf from a tank blast.
Sinco later said the look said everything: terrified, exhausted, and glad just to be alive. The photo ran in more than a hundred newspapers, and Dan Rather even singled it out on the evening news.
Embarrassed by the fame, Miller asked a reporter to tell Marlboro he was down to four packs, and then went back to the fight.
