I find this extremely sad.
The NFT art space and extensions such as AI film and AI music are absolutely brimming with brilliant creatives who perfectly fuse traditional art forms with technology and are shaping the future of art, music, film, culture, thoughts, humanity even. I'm sure this person would have been enriched by being introduced to vibrant thinkers, feelers and doers, instead of being left in a cocoon of status. The beauty of NFTs is the people.
Not long ago, my friend, a very wealthy, successful older man, told me he wanted to invest in NFTs. He asked me what he could buy, where he could put his money, and how this industry even survives.
I spent a long time thinking about what I could show him or recommend without feeling embarrassed. Something that could actually pay off or generate a meaningful return. Something that would make sense to a person who casually buys a yacht on the weekend because he’s bored at home.
In the end, I couldn’t let myself to bring him into this world at all.
Because honestly, I had no idea what I could offer him here that wouldn’t eventually disappoint him.
Buy some weird pictures that only a tiny circle of anonymous people understands?
Invest in an NFT platform that barely makes any money?
Introduce him to our creative communities, turn him into an angel investor, and then struggle to explain why he should spend his money on these artworks instead of the ones hanging in museums?
The whole thing actually made me a little sad.
I felt bad for him, for myself, for all of us — and for this entire strange little industry we’ve somehow built.
