The standard is only as good as the resources and culture behind it. I’ve been a fan of the culture inside the Woody for more than 30 years—that’s why I’ll pay to fly down from Georgia and spend the whole week watching practice instead of just going to games.
I watch every interview, and I know the type of young men we have in that building. These players give up personal time, stay in the Woody, and put in the work to get better. That’s why you will never hear me blame the players. I know the sacrifices they make and the work they put in.
Ohio State’s last three national championships were culture championships.
Tressel did not have the talent or resources Urban Meyer and Ryan Day have had, but he won a national championship against Miami because his team believed in itself, played disciplined football, and did not beat itself mentally. With today’s resources, Tressel would thrive because his players would be confident, prepared, and fundamentally sound.
Urban’s championship run began after the home loss to an unranked Virginia Tech team. That group came together inside the Woody and built something stronger. Ryan Day’s championship came when the outside world turned its back on them and all they had was the Woody, the brotherhood, and each other.
That is the formula.
They need to change whatever is not working—not the standard for the players, but the way Ryan Day delivers and reinforces it. I thought he had figured this out after the championship. There is a difference between losing to a better team and knowing you beat yourself.
It is Ryan Day’s full responsibility to make sure his players enter the fourth quarter mentally confident, physically ready, and emotionally composed. A coach cannot drain the energy from his team with fear, tightness, or hesitation. Ohio State’s identity has to be built on confidence, discipline, brotherhood, and finishing—not just talent, facilities, and slogans.
