I’ve seen a lot of this, and it’s just untrue. Indiana is 7th in EPA/dropback, 19th in pass success %. Hoover has the 2nd-best passer rating at the 10th-longest ADoT. 33 QBs have ADoT 10+ yards. He’s 3rd in turnover-worthy play %, 8th in success %, 12th in big-time throw %.

Don’t think this is going to change until teams don’t walk into Saturday knowing they can take away the run and not get punished consistently through the air.

Basically, Hoover is playing above the rim, and he’s doing it as well as anyone in the country. He won the Nebraska game with his arm. Indiana averaged 3.0 ypc in that game. And he struggled against OSU but was the reason Indiana had a chance offensively.

I’m not really sure how folks believe defenses just aren’t threatened by Hoover, especially when he has Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh. No, the run game issues are not because of Josh Hoover.

This is a really bad showing for Indiana. Your offense - predicated on the run game - simply can’t execute at this rate. 15% success before contact suggests it’s OL- and/or scheme-based issues. That rate’s the same as TCU’s rn. Gotta find a way to run the ball.

SMU is 25th in SP+, 35th in FPI, and 44th in FEI. 5-1 against the 65th-toughest schedule so far (via FPI). Could absolutely lose two games by the time it meets ND. Indiana - the SOS punching bag - has 5 opponents ranked above SMU in FPI. Already 2-1 against them.
Those teams (currently) being: #1 Miami (6-0) November 7th #2 BYU #23 SMU November 21rst As it stands, the loss to BYU remains a “good” loss — but it's value hinges on the Cougars finishing the season strong and Notre Dame securing a statement win over the Hurricanes.

Hmm, not great for Indiana.

To translate the axes: Share of available yards (X axis) = What percentage of yards between the LOS and goal line did the punter advance the ball? Pinned inside 20 (Y axis) = What percent of kicks resulted in possession inside the opponent's 20-yard line?

Tulsa transfer DT Joe Hjelle blew through the center. True freshman LB Jacob Savage beat a TE block to initiate contact. True junior Rolijah Hardy assisted across the formation. Indiana's front is stout.
People rightfully complain about heavy sets but this is a TD if 75 doesn't get absolutely blasted off the ball

Three teams left, and all three have bigger-than-average analytics staffs. Brewers: 46 (2nd in MLB) Rays: 39 Guardians: 30 League average: 28.5 The Phillies have the biggest staff in baseball, and they're already home. Like payroll, it's one input. Everything else combined still matters more.

I think it’s safe to let this go. 8 guys drafted in 26. Can add undrafted Kahlil Benson to this list of Sunday players. Still have the following left to enter from that 2025 team: Carter Smith, Charlie Becker, Tyrique Tucker, Stephen Daley, Rolijah Hardy, among others.
Cooper and Black look like Sunday players. Mendoza TBD. Interesting.

Baked into this NFL watch is the assumption that Indiana was so old that its greatest contributors didn't return in 2026, when it actually returned 56% production (ranked 52nd by SP+), including a Day 1 WR and a fringe Day 1 OT. In total, they kept 12 starters.

So many folks get lost in measuring teams against each other at the player level (recruiting stars/ratings), but we don't really have a similar value metric for coaches. Coaching has been central to Indiana 2024-26. Not enough emphasis on coordinators/S&C in particular.

"The players are executing on the field!" Yes, but within a system that has been refined in the shadows of lower-level football for a decade-plus. There aren't many teams operating like that currently.

The sport is changing on so many fronts. It's going to be difficult to understand 2025 Indiana statistically without some time to analyze a larger sample. Trends that pre-date the portal, NIL, increased school investments, or modern hiring trends won't apply accurately.

Yes, arguing about officiating is ridiculous. The place Indiana's fans come from transcends officiating.

Well Taylor. I respect your work a lot but you’re implying that OSU gets favorable calls. ALL fans complain about this for all teams. I listen to all their podcasts and know this. And it’s all BS. There is no conspiracy of calls. Fans ONLY pay attention to calls or plays that don’t go their way. And I see the same phenomenon for people that cover their teams. People covering Indiana complain about this as do people who cover Ohio State. That’s the comical part.

Indiana fans are frequently accused of not watching before 2024, but nobody making those accusations was watching Indiana before 2024.

Tough news for former Hoosier, Anthony Jones.
Anthony Jones played on a broken foot and will be out for a while, Rhule said. Obviously huge Genatone will have to have season-ending surgery. Mozee will be out for a while. Could have Rule back for the Washington game.

I don’t think it’s a back issue. Not sure it would’ve mattered if it was Martin or the others carrying the ball the last two weeks.
Replying to @ByTaylorL
Will Martin make a difference? Or is this a line issue?

I think this is the ultimate takeaway to me. Indiana proved it can play at a championship level again this year. Now, they’ve gotta go get it.
Cignetti: "I think we were all feeling pretty bad after the game that night. I woke up with a new perspective, that we proved we were capable. Just gotta clean up certain areas." #iufb
