Exploring the frontier of science for the benefit of humanity.

🔭 10 Years of FAST: Keeping Our Eyes on the Universe Ten years ago, on September 25, 2016, FAST was completed in Guizhou, China. Since then, the world's largest single-dish radio telescope has been listening to the Universe, helping scientists explore pulsars, galaxies, interstellar matter and more. 🌌 Ten years on, the journey of discovery continues. Happy 10th anniversary, FAST! 🎉 #FAST #RadioTelescope #RadioAstronomy #Astronomy #Space #Universe

🌕✨ On September 25, FAST celebrates the 10th anniversary of its completion — and this year, the milestone falls on the Mid-Autumn Festival, when families and friends gather to celebrate under the full Moon. For the past decade, FAST has been listening to faint signals from deep space and helping scientists uncover new stories about the universe. FAST is open to scientists worldwide, and we can’t wait to see what the next decade will bring. 🔭🌌 Happy 10th anniversary since FAST’s completion, and Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! 🌕 #FAST #RadioTelescope #Astronomy #MidAutumnFestival #HappyAnniversary

🌌 We've traced the journey of high-energy cosmic particles across 42 light-years. Using joint observations from the Einstein Probe (EP) and the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), we’ve discovered an extraordinarily long X-ray tail near a pulsar about 4,600 light-years from Earth. Stretching about 42 light-years, the tail aligns with ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray emission detected by LHAASO, providing new evidence that high-energy particles can travel through interstellar space along a preferred direction. 🌌 We've discovered the lowest-mass double neutron star system known to date! Using FAST, we identified PSR J1856-0039, with a total mass of just 2.488 Suns and an orbital period of 2.36 hours. The system offers a rare test of general relativity, showing effects including gravitational redshift, time dilation and orbital decay caused by gravitational-wave emission. The pair is expected to merge in ~82 million years. 🔭✨ #CAS #FAST #NeutronStars #Astronomy #GeneralRelativity #GravitationalWaves

⚡ This isn't CGI. We actually triggered lightning — on purpose! A rocket trails a thin metal wire into the sky, triggering an imminent natural lightning strike a fraction of a second early and guiding it to a designated location — like a thin thread pulling lightning down from the clouds. Why do this? Natural lightning is unpredictable and fleeting. Artificial triggering allows scientists to observe lightning up close, develop detection technologies and test lightning protection. 🎬 Hit play and watch us bring lightning down from the sky! #CAS #IAP #AtmosphericScience #LightningResearch #Thunderstorm

🔭 What if AI could help run a telescope? The StarWhisper Telescope, developed by the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), was featured among the "Selected AI Agents 2025 in Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry and Materials Science" in Stanford HAI's AI Index Report 2026. We're exploring how AI agents can go beyond data analysis to help plan and execute astronomical observations, while a digital simulation environment allows us to test observation strategies and optimize telescope operations—without using valuable observing time. 🤖🌌 #CAS #StarWhisperTelescope #AIForAstronomy #Astronomy #AIAgents #SpaceScience

✨ We've uncovered a 100-million-year-old "firefly" revealing the early evolution of insect communication. 🐞 Preserved in Burmese amber, the newly discovered firefly-like beetle Icaroramusretains unusual antennae and light-producing organs. Its antennae may have helped detect chemical signals and find mates. Its light-producing organs may have served defense functions, while possibly representing an early step toward light-based communication. This tiny insect shows that ancient firefly relatives had already evolved complex sensory systems over 100 million years ago. 🌌 We've observed how matter travels through the cosmic web. Using SDSS data, we found that satellite galaxy motions are linked to cosmic filaments, providing observational evidence for a two-stage process: 1/ Matter first flows into filaments. 2/ It then travels along them toward galaxy groups and clusters. Cosmic "highways" leave "tire tracks" in galaxy motions. ✨ Read more: english.cas.cn/newsroom/rese… #CosmicWeb #Astronomy #Galaxies #SpaceScience #Universe #Cosmology #GalaxyEvolution

🔬We've made the most precise measurement yet of the Λ hyperon's electric dipole moment (EDM), improving precision by about 1,000× over the 1981 result. 🌀The Λ hyperon is a short-lived subatomic particle containing a strange quark. Its EDM describes a tiny imbalance in how positive and negative charge is distributed. ⚛️Using quantum entanglement between Λ and anti-Λ hyperons, we found no significant EDM signal—but demonstrated a new way to study fleeting particles and probe new physics. 🚀 We have revealed, for the first time, how powerful jets from an X-ray binary gradually narrow as they move away from the central black hole. Using high-resolution radio observations of the X-ray binary SS 433, we found that its twin jets gradually narrow in a curved, almost parabolic patterns — and, intriguingly, that the way they narrow changes over time. 🦋 We've developed a pump-free airborne sampler inspired by how some butterflies drink nectar. Our Film-rupture Actuated Capillary Enrichment (FACE) sampler uses liquid-film and its rupture to capture/transfer airborne targets —without pumps or batteries. From infectious disease detection to air pollution and agricultural monitoring, FACE could offer a simpler, more accessible way to sample the air around us. 🌌 The universe's star factory is slowing down—but it's not running out of fuel. We analyzed 2.5 million galaxies with data from FAST & DESI and discovered that fewer stars are forming not because galaxies lack neutral hydrogen, but because they are becoming less efficient at turning this gas into star-forming molecular hydrogen. ✨ A new clue to why galaxies fade over cosmic time. 🦗Between Water & Land We've identified a 324-million-year-old insect fossil that lived a semi-aquatic life. With paddle-like abdominal appendages, it may have moved through water while retaining features adapted for life on land. The finding suggests insects conquered land step by step—not in a single leap. 🌊🌿 Read more: english.cas.cn/newsroom/head… #CAS #Evolution #Paleontology #Fossils #Insects #AncientLife
