That was the message of the Fourth Meeting of the Competition and Consumer Authorities of the Regional Economic Communities (RCCAs) of East African Community (EAC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU/UEMOA) which was held on 18-19 September 2026 in Banjul, Gambia on the sidelines of the inaugural annual ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) conference. The RCCAs meet annually to discuss matters of common interest in order to strengthen cross border cooperation and collaboration on competition and consumer protection matters. Mr Boniface Makongo, Director Competition of the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCC), stated this during a panel session at the Inaugural Annual Conference of ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA). The panel session focused on the topic of, "Reforms, Compliance and Effective Implementation of Competition Law". Mr Makongo stated that the CCCC was established in 2013 and few national competition agencies in COMESA were operational at the time. He stated that the adoption of competition laws and establishment of competition agencies improved over time. The present state of affairs is that nineteen (19) out of twenty-one (21) Member States have adopted competition laws which are at various stages of implementation. According to information provided by Woolworths to the CCCC, the recall was initiated due to the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae, a bacterium that may be found in wet manufacturing environments.
