'During the few months i have spent in office, I have discovered that many cooperatives are on paper. We have over 50,000 registered, but a significant number are breifcase cooperatives. Many have weak leaders, poor record keeping and don't hold AGMs, among other challenges. Today, @mtic_uganda has held an engagement with the media (journalists, editors and broadcasters) aimed at strengthening collaboration and partnership with the Fourth Estate.
The meeting which took place at the Ministry Headquarters at Farmers' House in Kampala was chaired by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives @SanjayTanna444 who was accompanied by @dbahati the State Minister for Industry and @AleroTomAza the State Minister for Cooperatives.
The Ministers updated the members of the media on the new developments in the Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Sectors, and the Ministry's strategic approach in implementing the Ten-Fold Growth Strategy which seeks to grow the economy to USD 500 billion by 2040.
@SanjayTanna444 noted that the Ministry is currently focused on reducing Uganda's import bill by promoting value addition, digitization of the Ministry processes to clean up the different sub sectors, engaging existing and new players, facilitating the small players to grow, among other initiatives. /1

Uganda has launched the Cooperative Education Programme, a major step towards professionalising and strengthening the cooperative movement through specialised training.
The programme will enable higher institutions of learning to offer diploma, undergraduate, master’s and PhD programmes in cooperatives.
The launch took place during the National Cooperative Conference 2026 at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Nakawa, where the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. @Rukianakadama, representing H.E. Gen. @KagutaMuseveni, highlighted cooperatives’ role in savings mobilisation, access to finance, improved production, markets and household incomes. /1

Hon. @SanjayTanna444, Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, visited Steel and Tube Industries in Namanve as part of his ongoing engagement with Uganda’s industrial sector.
During the visit, the Minister noted the challenges posed by flooding, which the company attributed to poor management of drainage works by the contractor, resulting in significant losses.
Hon, @SanjayTanna444 committed to following up on key concerns raised by the company, including access to stainless steel scrap, land for establishing an iron plant in Rushere, Kiruhura, and taxation on imported spare parts used in the manufacture of trucks.
