On that day he entered the Soldier Readiness Processing Center armed with an FN Five-seveN pistol [a semi-automatic pistol with magazine capacity extended to 30 rounds] and opened fire on unarmed soldiers and civilians who were preparing for deployment or returning from it. Witnesses reported that he shouted “Allahu Akbar” before and during the attack. He killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others before civilian police officers shot In 2008–2009 he exchanged roughly 18–20 emails with Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born al-Qaeda cleric then in Yemen. Hasan asked about the religious permissibility of a Muslim soldier killing fellow soldiers who were about to deploy against Muslims, and about whether such an act could count as jihad. Awlaki’s replies were encouraging rather than cautionary.
