Richard Gooddine was an East Point police sergeant when he found the girl with her friends at a park. He threatened to take all the teenagers to jail for “breaking curfew,” then singled out the 15-year-old and put her alone in his police SUV. When one of her friends asked to ride with them, Gooddine refused. He said he was taking her home. Instead, he drove her around for hours, took her to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her inside the patrol vehicle. When the girl finally got home, her mother rushed her to a hospital for a rape kit. Less than 10 minutes after she got there, Gooddine walked into the SAME hospital IN UNIFORM. The hospital went into an emergency lockdown. Staff said Gooddine became agitated and intimidating, refused to identify himself and demanded information. A charge nurse said he told them, “Everything here is my business,” then asked if they wanted their relationship with police to change. A nurse said Gooddine then looked through the glass at the 15-year-old and her family—and smiled… Hospital surveillance also showed Gooddine repeatedly wiping his hands while staff tried to get him to leave. Investigators believed he was trying to wipe away evidence. They later found the girl’s DNA on the turn signal inside his police SUV. And she was NOT the first girl to accuse him. Years earlier, another girl said Gooddine began “mentoring” her when she was 14 and later sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors did not bring that case at the time, saying they feared a trial would retraumatize her. Other women also accused Gooddine of sexual misconduct during police encounters. One said he sexually assaulted her after arresting her. His own department investigated that complaint and declared it unfounded. Court records show at least five women and girls had accused Gooddine of inappropriate sexual contact over the years. His first trial even ended without a verdict after one juror said she could not believe a police officer would assault women that way and refused to deliberate. This month, a new jury convicted Gooddine of aggravated sexual battery, child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes and charges involving attempts to hinder testimony or prosecution. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to life in prison plus 20 years.
