The Minister of Livestock and Pastoral Development of the Republic of
#Somaliland, Dr. Omar Shuaib Mohamed, presented a comprehensive report on the significant surge in livestock exports during today's Council of Ministers meeting.
The Minister highlighted the vital necessity of formulating an all-encompassing national strategic framework aimed at enhancing livestock breeding, animal health, production, and welfare standards across the country.
The Minister informed the Cabinet that the Ministry has substantially expanded veterinary treatment and vaccination campaigns for live export animals, with a particular focus on endemic animal diseases.
He emphasized that the livestock trade serves as a primary economic backbone directly sustaining the livelihoods of a large segment of Somaliland’s population, necessitating a modern shift away from traditional pastoralist methods.
Furthermore, the Minister underscored the urgent need for Somaliland to strategically adapt to intensifying competition within international livestock export markets. He strongly recommended the immediate construction and equipping of a dedicated 'livestock export terminal' at the Port of Berbera to boost the quality, speed, and market competitiveness of Somaliland’s livestock exports.
