Today is the memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch, a disciple of the Apostle John. Obviously a man with great knowledge given he learned from someone who walked with Jesus and wrote scripture. Some of my favorite quotes:
1. “They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again.” -St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 7
2. “Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is administered either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it.”
-St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8
3. “See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles.”
-St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8
4. “There is but one altar for the whole Church, and one bishop, with the presbytery and deacons.”
-St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Philadelphians, 4
5. “Wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.”
-St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8
Saint Ignatius, bishop and martyr: a disciple of Saint John the Apostle, he was the second after Saint Peter to govern the Church of Antioch. He was condemned to the beasts in the reign of the Emperor Trajan and was taken to Rome where he was crowned with a glorious martyrdom. On the journey, while suffering the ferocity of the guards who were like leopards, he wrote seven letters to different Churches, in which he entreated the brethren to serve God in unity with the bishops, and not to impede his immolation as a victim for Christ.
Saint Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr, pray for us!
