Liberal arts colleges have a duty to be custodians of history, philosophy, and culture of the spaces they inhabit. Chasing national rankings divorces colleges from a local mission they have even as they teach timeless things.
The saddest aspect of the US' cultural decline is the death of local pride. Midcentury historical societies flourished in small towns throughout the country, with the help of local gentry and profs from local colleges. The death of local pride is the death of broader republic.

Since freshman year of college I have always found Socrates sincere while everyone else around him crashes against his sincerity as waves against a rock. I have no argument for this. It goes against brilliant readings I admire. But it's just there, to me, and always has been.
The superficial irony folks notice in the dialogues belies their true esoteric core: Socrates is among the most sincere human beings to have ever lived 🙃😂

It is a little surreal to read this article and recognize that what are thought to be fraught issues of domination & fidelity for one side are thought quaint, hopeful, and refreshing for another. Some examples:

I should've written a short article about this when I had the chance--but I think Coulter gets the process vs. post liberal theology thing backwards. Process theology was still ontological & interested in 1st order truth claims; post lib theology gave this up for communitarianism
We don't yet understand the full impact of process theology on American Protestantism. It's not just in the Methodism of John Cobb, Schubert Ogden, Walter Wink, and Catherine Keller, it's also behind the creational spirituality of Episcopalian Matthew Fox.

Now that process theology is passé, and post liberalism as Coulter narrates it is on the way out, Protestant thought is suffering terribly from amnesia about ontology. The best on offer is 'retrieval' of classical metaphysics with some real pitfalls.
