For years, politicians have not been permitted to give speeches at the official Ground Zero ceremony. The day is deliberately kept focused on the victims, their families and the people who ran toward those burning buildings. Clinton showed up today. Bush showed up. Obama showed up. Biden showed up. None of them needed a microphone. None of them needed applause. None of them needed September 11 to be about them. Donald Trump wanted to speak. When Ground Zero wouldn't give him the stage, he ran to the Pentagon where he could demand one. And he gave his speech anyway. Like a petulant child who couldn't get his way, the President of the United States apparently couldn't simply stand silently with the families and honor their dead. He needed a microphone.
