This isn’t just about faster downloads. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon is describing a much bigger vision for 6G: a wireless network that doesn’t just connect devices, it also senses the physical world around them. In an interview with Fortune, Amon compared future 6G radio connections to “radar at scale.” He said AI could process those signals to map cars, buses, bicycles, pedestrians, drones and other moving objects, ultimately helping create what he called a “digital twin of the entire world.” He also said, plainly, that “everything that is moving is going to be tracked.” And this isn’t just something he said during one interview. Qualcomm’s own 6G research describes Integrated Sensing and Communication, where RF signals can be used not only for connectivity but also to detect presence, motion, gestures, vehicles, drones and environmental changes. Qualcomm says AI, sensing and digital twins are expected to become fundamental parts of 6G. Qualcomm has already demonstrated sensing systems capable of detecting and tracking drones and vehicles and describes future networks creating continuously updated digital representations of physical environments. But listen carefully to what that future actually involves. The network becomes a sensor. RF connections become inputs for AI. Physical movement becomes data. Wearables and cameras add more context. Digital twins continually update. AI agents consume that information. Now ask the questions that should be asked before this infrastructure becomes ubiquitous... Who controls the resulting data? Who gets access to it? How long is it retained? Can individuals opt out of being detected by network-level sensing? What happens when wireless infrastructure can identify and track movement even when the object being detected isn’t actively transmitting? What protections exist against the same infrastructure being repurposed for mass surveillance? And where is the line between creating a useful digital model of the physical world and creating a system capable of monitoring human movement at unprecedented scale?
