As global demand for critical minerals grows, Africa must ensure that its mineral wealth drives its own development rather than reproducing old patterns of extraction. That means moving beyond exporting raw materials towards value addition, local industrialisation, decent jobs, technology transfer and greater African ownership across mineral value chains. Migration and modern day slavery are entrenched, systemic issue in the global economy. Strong legislation and enforcement against anybody found culpable in modern day slavery can serve as a deterrent. Youth unemployment and poverty alleviation programmes can reduce the rate at which the youth will plan to leave their country for greener pastures. The Kilimanjaro Declaration outlines the foundational philosophy of the Africans Rising movement. The declaration unifies all members of Africans Rising for Unity, Justice, Peace and Dignity, which was formally launched on African Liberation Day, 25 May, 2017. For the month of July we will be highlighting Climate Justice which is one of the core pillars of the Africa We Want.
