I got hired 5 years ago by On3/Rivals to be a national scout and rank players. I worked in scouting at LSU, Baylor, Texas A&M and was the Director of Scouting at Texas Tech. So my background as an evaluator is nearly 12 years total with experience at the highest levels of CFB. I get these prospects in my inbox. I give a film review (about a paragraph or two), scoring on 10 traits with explanations for each score, and then about ~500 words in a scouting summary that explain what I saw from an athletic, technical and projection perspective. Then a list of areas to improve, and areas they excel, and a player comparison. And then I call the coach to get an idea of who the kid is, how they work, how are the grades, how’s his support system, and how he feels about the kid and his ability in general. Then we send it off to them. That all comes from me, not AI or anything outside of my brain. I really do take pride in my work with these reports because I want to firstly, be right. I think as evaluators we all want to do our best to be correct in our projections and recommendations. And secondly, genuinely give my advice and opinion on how I feel about the kid as a prospect and how I would go about the recruiting process, especially as someone who has been tasked with evaluating/offering/recruiting prospects for college teams. Will I always be correct? No. Will I have a kid I grade as a D2 prospect end up as a FCS signee? I’m sure that’s very possible. But will I always give my GENUINE opinion based off of all the information I can possibly gather in order to give the kid, his family and his coach the most authentic response I possibly can? 100%. Is the kid I evaluate guaranteed to become a 3-star? No, those are primarily reserved for prospects who we expect to sign at the FBS level (with some exceptions of course, like someone who has the ability to be recruited by G5 schools but maybe ends up signing FCS). But are they given a grade that coincides with the level I projected them to and that grade is able to seen by anyone that goes to the Rivals On the Radar page? Yes. Ultimately, if someone wants to pay for what I have always felt is a consultation from an evaluator, they can do that if the price is reasonable for them. It may not be what they want to hear, and it may not end up getting them a 3-star rating. But it will give them MY honest opinion, recommendation and advice. If you think it’s worth $500 to know what I think your future is as a collegiate prospect? Go for it. If you don’t? I totally get it and understand. Sad bc there’s so many parents that will do this instead of their sons having actual good film Can’t rank players if they don’t know the scheme, real height/weight, haven’t watched all game film, haven’t seen in person. Eval/scouting is full body of work. Not a rivals profile🥴
