As we start a new football season, here are 10 Keys to Being a Great Assistant Coach....
1. Be Loyal
Loyalty earns respect. You can prepare to be a head coach without undermining others. Support the head coach, the staff, and the mission. Loyalty builds trust, and trust builds teams.
2. Show Improvement
Don’t stay the same. Keep learning techniques, schemes, and ways to improve. Be a student of the game, no matter how much experience you have.
3. Make Your Role Special
Whatever you're in charge of, (position group, special teams, equipment, etc.) make it excellent. Treat your area like it’s the most important part of the program.
4. Give Meaningful Feedback
Help players grow. Don’t just say “do better.” Teach. Correct. Encourage. Give feedback they can use to get better.
5. Never Be Unprepared
Time is the one resource you get equal with your opponent. Don’t waste it. Have a plan. Be efficient. Be ready every day.
6. Be Energy-Positive
Bring good energy consistently. Your tone helps set the team’s tone. Be the coach that players and staff want to be around.
7. Communicate Clearly
Be direct, respectful, and open. Talk with people, not at them. Good communication prevents confusion and builds cohesion.
8. Be Reliable
Do what you say you’ll do. Be on time, every time. Great head coaches want assistants they can trust without micromanaging.
9. Develop Relationships
Invest in people. Players don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Relationships are the foundation of influence.
10. Support the Head Coach's Vision
Even if you’d do things differently, support the head coach’s vision publicly and work to carry it out fully. Alignment creates momentum.
