A Fresno State assistant coach once drove to Palo Alto High School to scout a player. It was not Davante Adams. Tonight, at 33, Adams caught 8 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns on Monday Night Football. His 119th career touchdown catch moved him to seventh in NFL history. Here is how he almost got missed. Adams grew up in East Palo Alto. Basketball was his sport. He played varsity guard at Palo Alto High and did not get serious about football until he was an upperclassman. His grades were a problem too. "He had bad grades. He hadn't applied himself his first two years," said Keith Williams, then the receivers coach at Fresno State. Williams had come to Palo Alto to see someone else. Head coach Earl Hansen pulled him aside. "The kid you're coming to see is good, but we have another kid, Davante Adams, he's a late bloomer in football experience, but he's a heck of an athlete." As a senior, Adams played receiver and cornerback and helped Palo Alto go undefeated and win a state title. He still only got two offers. San Diego State and Fresno State. He picked Fresno State and sat out his first year to get eligible in the classroom. Williams saw something the transcripts did not. "He was able to realize, 'This dude is actually legit smart, he's just not applying himself in the classroom,'" Adams said later. In 2013, catching passes from Derek Carr, Adams led the entire country in catches, yards and touchdowns. 131 catches. 1,719 yards. 24 touchdowns. The Packers took him 53rd overall. Six Pro Bowls. Three All-Pro teams. He has led the NFL in touchdown catches three times, the most recent one just last season with the Rams. Tonight, he caught a 31 yarder in the first quarter and an 11 yarder in the third. He finished 11 yards shy of the best receiving game of his career. That is 119 touchdown catches for his career. Only Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Cris Carter, Marvin Harrison and Larry Fitzgerald have more. Fitzgerald is two away. Rams 28, Giants 6. Not bad for the other kid.
