Today, as the United States completes its military withdrawal from Iraq, Kata’ib Hezbollah is celebrating a “victory” over America - parading its drones down a red carpet. There is something deeply revealing about that image. These militias were supposed to surrender their weapons and come under state control as the U.S. left Iraq! Instead, one of Iran’s most powerful Iraqi proxies is celebrating the American departure while publicly displaying the very military capability it was supposed to give up. And remember: the United States is currently at war with Iran! Whatever one thinks about the U.S. presence in Iraq, this image says a lot about the unfinished business of establishing the Iraqi state’s monopoly on weapons and armed force.
