Nicole Hannah-Jones demonstrates that parents often choose schools at odds with what's best for their kids. So did my parents. New at @reason reason.com/2026/10/01/like-n…

As a fellow mediocre Catholic school conscriptee due to my Irish mom's unwillingness to upset her Catholic parents, this was a cathartic read.

Profiles in courage, all.
The Ivies are surprisingly leading the push to bring back the SAT and ACT.

Wait until you see what is coming now that generative A.I. can wholesale write a dissertation and accusations of that usage are seen as discriminatory.

Academic journals seem to be moving towards A.I. policies that are basically disclosure, no reigning in of generative A.I other than to check its work (probably by another AI). How are we actually going to determine whether something an author turns in is *their contribution to the field when A.I. is providing arguments and analysis? How do we allocate rewards for thought and intellectual ingenuity? Typing in the best prompt?

When the faculty stop celebrating the victory of the Democratic Socialist candidates in New York, we’ll restart our efforts to convince the state legislature and board of regents that college faculty aren’t biased politically.

Yes. NYC is the safest big city in the U.S. I lived there a decade (now in the burbs but because of property prices). It is the people in the burbs who never venture there who hold a Fox-fueled view that is out of touch with reality. Of course there is shit there...but the anecdotes and exaggerations are just that.

Public sector unions should not exist. Holding the public hostage while they extort the government for more tax dollars is unacceptable. I cant wait for automation to take these jobs.

There is a judgment attached to not belonging to the "moral middle" when you are progressive. They have to convince themselves and others they aren't privileged. How much is conscious versus unconscious is unclear.
