New York promised your property taxes wouldn't jump more than 2% a year. But there's a loophole, and under @KathyHochul and @TomDiNapoli, local governments are running right through it. Since 2022, the share of cities planning to break the cap has more than tripled. Counties? Up 7x. School districts asking voters to break it went from 16 in 2023 to 38 this year. Albany has kept basic aid to cities, towns and villages flat for 15 years, and Hochul hasn't fixed it. Those costs land on your tax bill. And DiNapoli, the state's taxpayer watchdog? His office tracks what governments say they'll do, not what they actually did. Ask him how many broke the cap this year. He can't tell you. I won't pretend the Comptroller can freeze your taxes. But the watchdog should bark. As Comptroller, I will: 1. Publish a report card for every local government: its limit, what it charged, and whether it went over. 2. Audit anyone who breaks the cap without a proper vote and get your money back. 3. Expose every cost Albany dumps on your town. Enough taxpayer abuse!
