Plans released for a $16 billion mile-long ship capable of carrying 80,000 people. The 'Freedom Ship' would be home to about 50,000 people, with space for 10,000 tourists and 20,000 crew members. "The Freedom Ship is envisioned as a permanently mobile city at sea designed for long-term residence rather than short-term travel," the company says. The ship would be about 8 times the size of the current largest ship in the world, the Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. The plans include a 15,000-seat stadium, schools, colleges, shops, clubs, a water park, a music hall, museums, parks, and more. The ship, which would run on nuclear, would be too large to dock and would remain in international waters. Freedom Cruise International says it would go around the world every two to three years. Insane.

Never going to happen. There's no drydock that could handle maintenance and it would be a waste of resources to build one for a single ship of that size.

Can't wait for the first case of Norovirus. They can start calling it the USS Diarrhea. Imagine 80,000 people constantly reinfecting each other with explosive vomiting and diarrhea in the middle of the ocean, permanently quarantined by every nation on Earth, condemned to wander forever, until they all perish of fatal dehydration in lakes of intestinal effluent. Then the US Navy finally get the order and hit the stupid thing with a couple of tac nukes, just to make damn sure it's all vaporized/sterilized. Yeah. Mile long cruise ship. Great idea. Hard pass.

I worked cruise ships, and that would be a logistics nightmare. Primarliy, because you'd have to get a whole safty, security, international laws passed to ever have a nuclear reactor on a civilian anything. Secondly, because coordinating 50k in port would be the wrost experience known to man. Embarking/disembarking lines would run the entire ship. They'd have to make all new terminals for it, staff it to the hilt. The local vendors near the port would be overwhelmed, trasportation, etc. The hold for the galley would be enormous. The sheer amount of food this thing would have to take on would mean loading at every port, instead of on turnover days. Housekeeping would never survive. Many, many, many more reasons. My ship was about 2500 pax and 1700 crew and let me tell you it was not easy. I could not fathom going on one of the giant RCI ships with 4-5k passengers, not working there.

Insane. I hope they have massive and really good sewage treatment. Where will they get the food in International waters to feed 80k people/day? how will this do in a rolling, stormy sea?

If I can get out of paying US taxes and get to travel, sign me up. Sounds like a real sovereign citizen. On the flip side, it seems like the perfect 15 minute city and God forbid Hantavirus or whatever breaks out.
