One among hundreds of stories of surviving a crackdown as a Kaduna APC critic:
Salim Babajo (A Facebook influencer)
For months, Salim has been one of the top critics of the Kaduna APC government, and because of this, he was added to the list of public enemies number one. He became one of the key voices calling out government failures across the entire Zaria senatorial zone.
A few weeks back, Salim wrote on his page that his safety was at risk, as he was being tracked and monitored by authorities who wanted to arrest him.
This was an alarm that should not have been met with silence. Measures should have been taken—such as issuing a public statement, filing a court restraining order, or providing a safe house for him. To my knowledge, none of this was done.
Yesterday, while meeting with senior members regarding the arrest of 13 members from Kafanchan, one from Rigasa, and ten ADC members from Kudan, I received a report about Salim's situation. Salim sells power banks online, and his call was intercepted by a potential buyer who told him he would buy a large order once he restocked. That buyer was picked up by security personnel and forced to call Salim to bring the power banks.
Luckily, Salim was sleeping and missed 30 calls. They later released the buyer, who then informed Salim of what had happened.
Personally, I feel deeply unsafe knowing that state resources—which ought to be used to track dangerous bandits and secure Kaduna—are being used to track me or my team members.
I saw a girl whose face was smashed with a stone by an APC thug. I saw a woman stabbed, and many young, innocent guys arrested. For most of these arrests, neither party leadership nor their actions secured their release; on some days, you simply have to call on family, friends, or associates who have favors or leverage with the APC or security agencies.
A few weeks ago, I got intelligence that a hit was placed on one of our members—a young girl in her twenties. I got down on my knees in the middle of the night and prayed for her safety.
Until you are looked in the eye and told, "You are a problem to us; if you don't go silent, we will lock you up or silence you by any means necessary..."
Until a leader you respect is locked away for 7 months, or a respected religious leader in his 70s is arrested and still detained...
Until then, you won't understand certain decisions.
One of the ADC leaders in Jigawa was kidnapped along the Abuja–Kaduna highway on his way to pick up nomination forms from the ADC headquarters. He was a known thorn in the side of the powers that be in the state. Even after his ransom was paid, they still killed him.
I still see his son every day been left with orphans
