Twenty-five days later on April 12, 1980, he dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador and began the Marathon of Hope.

In October 1943, a German U-Boat surfaced off the coast of Labrador.
The crew made it to land and installed an automatic weather station to aid in the planning of attacks on Allied ships.
It remained there for the next three decades.

he spent decades as the dressing room attendant for the Edmonton Oilers and received the NHL Alumni Association's "Seventh Man Award". He is a member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and a school is named for him.

Instead he won four Stanley Cups and scored 135 goals in 45 games on his way to the Hall of Fame.

As a speed skater, he won two gold and a bronze in the 1984 Winter Olympics to go with his silver from the 1980 Olympics. A three-time World Champion, he held two world records during his career. He received the Order of Canada.

Through his career as a singer-songwriter, he has won eight Junos and is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Canada's Walk of Fame. His 1991 album Mad Mad World reached diamond status in Canada. He has sold over six million albums worldwide.
