An article from Manchester City’s own website dated 21 September 2018 has been brought to my attention. Andy Burnham was in China at the end of a trade delegation when, as Mayor of Greater Manchester, he joined the Manchester City delegation for the opening of City Football Group’s second office in China. Burnham said, “City Football Group’s work in Shenzhen demonstrates the football organisation’s commitment to China.” He then described CFG and the Chinese football authorities as “a perfect partnership.” That raises an obvious question for me, why was the Mayor of Greater Manchester effectively promoting City Football Group’s international expansion in China? Given the questions now being asked about Burnham’s links with Manchester City and its ownership, this deserves closer scrutiny.
