Zcash, Why the crash?
Shielded Labs disclosed a critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard circuit, found on May 29 by researcher Taylor Hornby using Anthropic's AI Opus 4.8. Patched June 1.
The bug allowed unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC by feeding false inputs to an elliptic curve multiplication.
After the announcement, ZEC dumped -55%. The team is now considering an upgrade to verify supply integrity and launch a new shielded pool with "turnstile accounting" to exclude counterfeit ZEC in Orchard.
The bigger picture: AI development will stress-test every blockchain. Bugs this deep, hidden for years and missed by top cryptographers, are nearly impossible for humans to spot. AI finds them in hours.
But there are upsides too:
AI doesn't sleep. It can scan smart contracts and circuits 24/7, not just pre-launch. Bugs get found and patched before they become exploits.
If teams use AI for defense, they beat attackers to the punch.
AI will force devs to write better code and do serious formal verification.
We'll use AI to test AI-written code. That closed loop raises the quality bar.
AI won't kill blockchains. It will force them to become antifragile. Ignore it, and you'll crash at the next model update.
