Ghanaian Returnee Says He Regrets Leaving South Africa After Government Promised Jobs, But Four Months Later He Had Received No Employment
Kofi Baah, a Ghanaian evacuated from South Africa, says he regrets returning home after receiving GH₵5,000 in government support. Speaking on Max TV in an interview cited by GhanaWeb on September 24, 2026, Baah said the money was insufficient to support his family of five, including four children.
Baah said part of the GH₵5,000 was used to secure accommodation after returning to Ghana, leaving little for his family’s daily needs. He said his firstborn is completing Senior High School this year, while his second child is attending basic school, making the financial support particularly difficult to manage.
He also claimed that Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister had promised returnees assistance in finding employment, which he said was the main reason many agreed to leave South Africa. Four months after returning, Baah said he had submitted his CV but received no concrete response, despite being told his details had been forwarded to companies.
Baah further said the Ghana Card promised to returnees had not been delivered and that there had been no government follow-up. He acknowledged the risks posed by anti-immigrant protests in South Africa but said returnees had developed safety measures by staying in groups and monitoring protest activity to alert others when danger approached.
