My great great grandparents were murdered in Auschwitz. My great grandmother lived under the Nuremberg laws. My grandmother survived Bergen Belsen. Jews, despite the anguish, never forget: we will survive this too. But the trauma is imprinted on our genes.

I’ve been critical of the way Israelis handle comms (to put it mildly) but the prime minister telling you to hire the plumber / hero for your plumbing needs is 10/10

On the one hand I feel bad for literally everyone involved. On the other hand I think everyone involved was responsible and is to blame.
UPDATE on the Cornell incident: As reported by ABC, newly released texts between Jane Doe and Male #1 from 4 days after the incident (several weeks before police report) demonstrate that she told him "everyone needs to grow up cause sexuality and sex and s---is changing and stuff like this is going to become more common, I'm also really open minded tho, I love you king." A couple weeks later, but still before she made a police report, the young man told her that he was concerned he'd been "labeled an assaulter" and she responded "I haven't said anything but I do know people are changing the narrative because like in any sexual scenario w one woman and many men the woman was probably the victim." While these texts do not conclusively prove she was not legally raped, they substantially strengthen the supposition that Jane Doe changed her story, and possibly genuinely changed her perception of what happened, as a result of being publicly shamed for having sex with many men or whatever was happening in her relationship with Male #1. The most important point though, is that destroying people's lives based on allegations to police, in a lawsuit, or elsewhere is extremely dangerous. It is exactly why civilized societies should not engage in the modern equivalent of witch trials, and people should decline to rush to judgment. The way this story has changed over mere days is a near perfect lesson in why we shouldn't call for people's heads simply because disturbing accusations have been made. Of course, no one will actually learn anything and nothing will change, regardless of how many times this sort of thing happens, because apparently as a nation, we are incapable of actual progress. I intend not to comment on this case again absent extraordinary developments, because my primary interest is not in determining one way or the other what happened, but in urging people to resist the temptation to engage in mob justice to the point law enforcement officers are acting at the public's direction. I believe that point has been made, although of course it won't satisfy the bloodthirsty.

This is so niche but these people are singing the words of a rabbi who lived in the 1700s and honestly I just love my people. “The whole world is a very narrow bridge and the main thing is to not be afraid at all”
Passengers of the FlyDubai flight on the way to Israel sing “And the main thing is—not to be afraid at all”: 180 people who came within a hair’s breadth of a terrible end.

“The probability that a plane full of Israelis will contain a trained assault team, two additional pilots, and, statistically, at least one cardiac surgeon, psychologist, lawyer, and diamond dealer is substantially higher than 50%.” Feels true.
A passenger on the Dubai–Tel Aviv flight recounts: “We are currently in Saudi Arabia. One of the crew members attacked the pilot with a knife and disabled the aircraft’s systems. Yaniv (pictured?) and another passenger stormed the cockpit and subdued the attacker. Luckily, there were two more pilots on board. They were the ones who managed to land the plane.” Well, yes. Overall, the probability that a plane full of Israelis will contain a trained assault team, two additional pilots, and, statistically, at least one cardiac surgeon, psychologist, lawyer, and diamond dealer is substantially higher than 50%.

We got an early taste of New York Magazine's new direction in the days after 10/7. In September 2023, we got a call: my husband @BenZevG would be featured in @NYMag's list of the most powerful New Yorkers. A (lovely) reporter interviewed multiple people about our synagogue. Mark Peterson came to take pictures of services right after Yom Kippur. The piece was filed. Then came 10/7. That Friday, we got another call. He'd been cut. "Editors got spooked," we were told. This was a little story about a shul drawing young Jews back to faith. It had nothing to do with the Middle East. Overnight, New York Jews like us -- Orthodox, deeply connected to our ancestral homeland -- had become untouchable. It was chilling. I sensed, in that moment, that this would be the beginning of Jews being pushed out of cultural institutions, and eventually, erased. So if you ever wondered why that list had 49 names instead of 50, now you know. They cut the rabbi.
