I held a discussion with a delegation from the @WorldBankGroup at my office regarding a new initiative: the Refugee Credit Access and Digital Verification Pilot.
For years, we have worked to ensure that refugees in Uganda are not merely hosted, but truly empowered. Many have built thriving businesses and sustainable livelihoods. Yet, too often, they remain locked out of formal credit because financial institutions cannot easily verify their identities. This pilot is designed to remove that barrier.
Implemented jointly by the @OPMUganda, @NITAUganda1, @UNHCRuganda, financial regulators, and licensed institutions, our approach is practical: start small, learn directly from the ground, include host communities, and scale up what works.
I extend my sincere thanks to the @WorldBankGroup for their steadfast partnership.
