Tamil Nadu government under CM Thalapathy Vijay has taken the Public (Law and Order) Department out of the RTI Act. The government issued a GO under Section 24(4) and classified the department as an “Intelligence and Security Organisation.” The Tamil Nadu Public can no longer use RTI to ask for many sensitive law-and-order files from this department. What kind of information will now be difficult to get in Tamil Nadu?

Opposition parties say this reduces transparency. They argue that information on police action, custodial deaths and communal violence is exactly the kind of information the public should be able to seek through RTI. The government has not yet given a detailed public explanation beyond calling it an intelligence and security organisation.
