THE ANATHEMA OF THE ADDED GOSPEL
One of the most comforting arguments deployed by Roman Catholic Church is its claim to numbers and prestige:
"How could over a billion people, hundreds of popes, and centuries of historic councils be wrong for 1500+ years?
"The Apostle Paul anticipated this exact reliance on religious pedigree. In his letter to the Galatians, he sets an absolute, terrifying boundary around the purity of the Gospel, explicitly declaring that the identity of the teacher is completely irrelevant if the message has been altered.
Paul begins his letter not with his usual commendations and prayers, but with a cry of absolute shock and alarm:
"I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ." (Galatians 1:6-7)
The Galatian church had not abandoned God to worship Jupiter or pagan idols. They were simply listening to religious teachers (the Judaizers) who claimed that while faith in Christ was necessary, you also needed to add human works and ritual compliance (specifically circumcision) to be truly justified.
This is the exact structural formula of the Roman Catholic system. Rome does not deny the grace of Christ; she simply adds her own list of ritual conditions like sacraments, penances, purgatorial cleansing, and compliance with the Pope.
Paul states that adding a human condition to the grace of Christ does not create a "better" gospel; it completely destroys it.
To ensure that no believer would ever be blinded by the grand appearance or historical authority of a religious institution, Paul issues a stunning hypothetical warning:
"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:8)
Pause and deeply reflect of the immense weight of this statement.
Paul places the original, written apostolic message above his own personal authority. He places it above the authority of an angel from heaven.
Therefore, it does not matter if a fallen man wears the papal tiara, claims apostolic succession, sits upon a man-made throne in Rome, or commands the allegiance of a billion people. If that man teaches that salvation is a progressive process dependent on human sacraments rather than a free gift received by faith alone, the Holy Spirit places that man under a DIVINE CURSE.
The Double Pronouncement of Damnation
To ensure that his readers did not mistake his intense emotion for a casual hyperbole, Paul immediately repeats the warning:
"As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:9)
The Greek word used here is ἀνάθεμα (anathema). It means to be completely set apart for total destruction and divine damnation.
Ironically, at the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholic Church pronounced over a hundred formal anthemas against anyone who believes the biblical gospel of justification by faith alone.
But history reveals a deeper, sobering reality:
Rome did not curse the Reformers. Rome simply codified the very perverted gospel that Paul had already placed under the eternal curse of God.
This is a sobering warning: any person who believes the gospel as taught by the Roman Catholic church will be eternally lost in the world to come.
