Nearly one year in, New York's congestion relief program is saving people time and creating good jobs on construction projects to deliver the reliable, accessible subway service that millions of riders deserve, not just in Manhattan, but deep into Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx

Bus delays are very fixable. I’m on one rn that just missed a light because it doesn’t have all-door boarding, even though there’s an OMNY machine already installed for the back door — it’s just not in use. Another minute delay every time this happens. Adds up!

Road deaths over the past 50 years have steadily declined for every other peer nation and over the past 15 years, converged to a similar rate. This implies a shared set of effective best practices. Practices our DOTs have completely rejected. Rejecting progress =@aashtospeaks

Many have speculated on what exactly caused the "sense of decline" that came to American communities, religions, towns, and so on after World War II. But isn't it obvious? We got automobiles en masse, huge highways, car-heavy suburbs, etc -- and everything became a CHOICE. When you live in a dense, walkable area with no car (whether it's an urban neighborhood or a rural village), there is a "vibe" on the street. You see people you know constantly, involuntarily, and get invited to things. You have to go to them, because it's not as if you're going to teleport six towns over for a big concert on Friday night -- you're going to be there, and whatever's going on is what's on offer. At those events -- from Parish suppers to funeral Masses to hockey nights at the pub -- you're going to be engaged in a kind of "theatre" of culture, you'll be a representative of your place, your family, your faith, etc. And as you and all the other neighborhood people coalesce in this fashion, you will be REIFYING your sense of culture, identity, faith, and so on. You'll be proving it to each other, refining it, being a part of something. The minute you add automobiles to this picture, all of that stuff is an "option" -- and it just so happens that culture has ever functioned in the manner we've known because it has been 100% non-optional, in your face, intensely local, etc. Automobiles disrupt this massively, and because of them, local pride, local Parishes, local accents, and basically all things that give us an identity and sense of collective purpose have died back and atrophied.

This new system would:   ✅ Require the Commissioner to notify eligible New Yorkers ✅ Require the Commissioner to obtain information necessary to notify additional New Yorkers who may be eligible for Fair Fares ✅ Require the Commissioner to report to the Council annually about enrollment and usage of the fair fares program ✅ Provide an option for eligible New Yorkers to consent to the use of information provided in their application ✅ Require the Commissioner to study the feasibility of establishing automatic enrollment in all city-administered benefits programs

Today, the @NYCCouncil voted to create a system to streamline Fair Fares enrollment for eligible New Yorkers using information they’ve already submitted to apply for SNAP or other HRA benefits. What even this piece misses is how much time it takes to travel between middle class jobs at the City's core and middle class housing near the periphery For people priced out of Northern Brooklyn and Western Queens, the suburbs are often easier to reach than Inwood or Bay Ridge
