Mehdi Hasan has come up with a test for racism that judges an idea by the conduct he attributes to it, blames Zionism for a displacement that Arab leaders brought about, and is applied to no people other than the Jews. If anyone ran the same test on a group
@mehdirhasan cares about, he would denounce it as bigotry, and here is what that looks like when it's applied to Islam:
“Whether you personally are a bigot is irrelevant. The issue is whether Islam is an ideology that, in practice, has discriminated against and dispossessed non-Muslims for centuries, from dhimmi status and the jizya to blasphemy laws today, and continues to do so. The answer is yes. Hence the label.”
Mehdi would rightly reject that argument, because it takes the conduct of particular states and movements and charges it to a faith and to everyone who holds it.
Zionism is the belief that Jews have a right to self-determination in their ancestral & indigenous homeland, and judging that belief by a highly selective reading of history commits the same error.
Whatever Arab displacement occurred west of the Jordan river resulted from decisions by the Palestinian Arab leadership and the Arab regimes backing it, which refused any arrangement that left the Jews any self-determination, however limited.
The Nazi-aligned Mufti of Jerusalem rejected the 1937 Peel plan, which would have given the Jews a state on roughly a fifth of the land. He also rejected the 1939 White Paper, which gave the Jews no state at all, promised an independent Arab-majority Palestine within ten years, and barred Jewish immigration after five years unless the Arabs agreed to it. Having refused even that, the Arab leadership chose war in 1947 and 1948, and that war is what tragically killed and displaced people on both sides.
What followed tells you which side actually practiced exclusion. The Arab armies emptied every piece of land they captured in 1948 of its Jews, including the Old City's Jewish Quarter and Gush Etzion, and roughly 850,000 Jews were driven out of Arab and Muslim countries in the years after. Israel's Arab citizens, by contrast, make up more than 20% of its population, vote, serve in the Knesset and sit on its Supreme Court, and enjoy more freedom than Arabs anywhere else in the Middle East.
Mehdi holds only one people to this standard, and his penchant for antisemitic double standards is the subject of my latest piece on him:
