Two-tier....still here A 15-year-old schoolboy, Frasier, was asleep in bed on August 3rd in Walsall when West Midlands Police banged on the door of the family home, brushed aside his mother, raced up the stairs and arrested him. Frasier, a fervent fan of Farage and Reform, had upset a local councillor with Facebook posts criticising the Tory's appearance. A complaint was made to police and the West Midlands force dispatched four officers in two police cars to apprehend Frasier. Outside in the street, Fraser was then searched in full view of the neighbours before being taken in a police car to the local station. He was searched a second time, put in a cell and had his fingerprints, DNA and mugshot taken. His shoes were removed, and Fraser was forced to sit alone in a “freezing cold cell” while back at his home, two officers searched his bedroom. Fraser was released on bail, banned from attending council meetings and deprived of his phone and laptop. The proposed social media ban for under-16s is not about protecting children online. It is a tool for the Government to gain greater control over what we think, say and do online. In one of his final acts as Prime Minister, Keir Starmer announced a blanket social media ban for under-16s, following the model adopted by Australia. But children in Australia have used VPNs to get around the ban. The Starmer Government even considered a VPN ban in the UK before putting the idea on ice. Such a move would have put us in the same company as North Korea, Iran and Iraq. Lisa Nandy has admitted that she sees the ban as a “staging post” towards a very interventionist state that polices and regulates the online space. In the past five years, 62,199 people have been arrested for communications offences, including over things they said online. At the same time, the Government is trying to lower the voting age to 16 through the Representation of the People Bill. It expects 16-year-olds to make informed choices at the ballot box and take part in our democracy, while restricting their access to social media—a key source of news and information about matters of democratic importance.
