Coordinated global action is needed to deal with the highest risk elements of AI. But we also need to be addressing these risks at home with something stronger than a digital duty of care or voluntary standards. On Friday govt officials couldn't even say how many data centres are operating in Australia and how many are Australian owned. A scarcity of specialists and unaffordable out of pocket costs are something Canberrans raise regularly with me. Too many people are missing out on the health care they need because they either can't afford it or because there isn't a specialist nearby or in the public system. Invasive species have a huge impact on biodiversity and agriculture in Australia. They have caused dozens of extinctions and cost us billions of dollars. We have world leading scientists and land managers working on this issue but funding is inconsistent which means we haven't had the sustained focus on them. We dropped the ball on rabbit biocontrol with no funding and are now paying the price. I welcome the small amount of funding that has been given, but we need year on year sustained funding to deal with invasive species. How many more warnings do we need before the Australian Govt takes AI risk seriously and legislates some strong guardrails? Then start pushing other countries to work together to slow frontier model development. This is about much more than just social media harm. The govt is woefully slow and underprepared in responding to frontier AI threats.

Decisions about taxpayer money should be based on community need, with clear & transparent criteria, not political advantage. Labor's defence is that ‘this is just politics as usual’ - well then we need to change the system and rebuild trust in politics. The ACT received just over $4 mil from this dodgy election slush fund - around 40% of what we would have received if funding had been distributed on population. Really disappointing Australia hasn’t joined the UK, France, Canada and others in expanding sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The UK PM was clear: this is about the unacceptable actions of the Israeli government, not the Israeli people and about refusing to just stand by and watch the horrors being perpetrated against Palestinians. How we fund our universities & what we charge students needs to change but I'm worried this latest bill bestows far too much power on the Minister of the day to intervene in the autonomy and academic freedom of our higher education sector. It also fails to provide support for a raft of students from low socio-economic backgrounds including in Canberra. Yesterday I gave evidence to the AUKUS Public Inquiry. I've heard from hundreds of Canberrans and did a survey on people views on AUKUS. The concerns are clear: cost, transparency, what defence capability we're not investing in because of this deal, and what AUKUS means for our sovereignty. The inquiry is doing important work, but we need a much broader and deeper conversation - an honest look at whether AUKUS is in our national interest. Not a single major party politician is expected to front up. If the case for the biggest defence spend in our history is so strong, we should expect them to make it publicly. Housing is consistently the biggest issue people raise with me - we can't afford for new supply to go backwards. Reports of further job losses at CSIRO are deeply concerning, particularly after around 1,100 roles have been lost in 2 yrs. Recent funding for urgent capital works was welcome, but CSIRO also needs long-term, sustained investment so it can retain the talented scientists and researchers we need to tackle the challenges ahead.
