for the first time, more American households have kittens than puppies. there's a reason for this: homeownership is declining, and homeowners are twice as likely as renters to have dogs. did cats engineer the housing crisis? i'll be honest: it is now more likely than not.

Cats require less money and labor. I get decent companionship and all I have to do is open a can and scoop shit from a box.

I think the other reason is that Cats are just way easier to take care of overall than dogs and I think a large majority of the American populace doesn't have the energy to be able to give a dog the love and attention it needs, especially bigger breeds.

The real answer is that 90% of landlords don't allow dogs now, but for some reason they do let you have a cat

They make sure Amazon supplies them with sufficient cardboard boxes, so it's highly possible

Goober inadvertently mentioned this worldwide this cat conspiracy to turn us into a nation of renters. Now he’s insisting it was just a joke, but I’m not buying it.

I’ve got 2 cats and own a house. I would happily have a dog if I thought I could care for it properly. One of my knees is out of whack and not likely to get better soon, so walking a dog isn’t on the cards.

Cats may be wondering why this is being considered a crisis...

This had not occurred to me! Our cats said they would not have chosen us if we did not have a home with appropriate acreage.

I do love dogs but caring for one is so much work. They need constant stimulation or they'll destroy your house. And they have to go outside multiple times a day to use the toilet.

We have that kitty's doppelganger - save for the eye color. Meet Pickles a home owner's cat.

Cats are self sufficient. Dogs need to be taken outside every 10 hours or they will just shit on your floor.

I know in my home town it was especially hard to find a rental that accepted dogs.

Idk but he looks a lot like my cat. Biggest difference is mine hates sleeping in cat beds.

We only adopted cats until we bought our house … then came the dogs (and more cats 😽). It’s difficult to have a dog in an apartment (if you can find a landlord that will allow them)
