Marco Rubio used to be a staunch opponent of Vladimir Putin, condemning his corruption, Russia’s interference in our elections, and abuses of power. Today, he’s inviting Putin to the G20 because, for Rubio, it’s all about bowing to Trump and whatever will bring him money and power. Never trust a weak politician who says the right things when it’s convenient, but lacks the courage to stand up to abuses of power when it matters most.

I remember when I had barely been sworn into Congress when the legendary Frederica Wilson invited me to her 5000 Role Models scholarship event where Danny Glover, a longtime supporter of her program was also a guest, and a photographer took a photo of the members of Congress with him. By the next morning, Spanish radio and the right-wing outrage machine were attacking me for taking a PHOTO with, as they called him, a “Castro sympathizer.” Fast-forward to today: this Republican administration is cutting major oil deals with Venezuela’s narcoregime government and welcoming Delcy Rodríguez to meet with the President in New York. Apparently a photo was scandalous, but oil deals and presidential meetings are just business and good for the Venezuelan people. Que insulto a la inteligencia de la comunidad Latina. So, please, spare me the lectures about “radical socialism.” If socialism is unacceptable when it’s politically convenient, but doing business with illegitimate and corrupt dictators is acceptable when there’s money and oil involved, call it what it is: hipocresia total.

Miami-Dade is 70% Hispanic. The Latino vote here can decide elections and send a warning about where the country is headed. I’ve said it for years: don’t write Florida off. Here’s an ad, a deceiving ad, from a Florida Republican congressmember who’s voted 100% with the extreme Trump policies including funding for ICE. Today she recognizes that she’ll probably lose her bid in 2026 in a Latino community where the inhumane treatment of immigrants is not a policy that Miami supports. I warned Maria Elvira about this a year ago, but now it’s too late to walk back and pretend she did anything to protect Miami from this disaster.

What separates the United States from so many other countries is the strength of our institutions, the rule of law, and the checks on executive power. Those principles matter in every election, including the 2026 midterms. Regardless of party, elected officials have a responsibility to uphold the Constitution and put the country and its institutions above any one individual drunk with power. #VOTE

I personally witnessed how immigrants in this country were treated like animals under Trump. We spoke out against it. But too many chose to ignore when children were separated from their parents and kept in cages. These images shouldn’t surprise anyone. The relentless dehumanization of our Latino communities has fueled hate, normalized cruelty and incited violence. These human rights abuses must stop. Now.
