A reminder on this World Contraception Day that the Trump admin allowed millions of taxpayer dollars worth of family planning supplies to spoil rather than provide them to people in need. Passing the Saving Lives and Taxpayer Dollars Act would prevent this from happening again.

Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks met with the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week.  Ranking Member Meeks reaffirmed OCHA’s important role in supporting humanitarian responses globally amidst unprecedented cuts in foreign assistance by the U.S. and other donors. He thanked Under-Secretary-General Fletcher for his leadership in calling for the U.S. and other international donors to commit funding for humanitarian disaster responses in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia, which are severely underfunded with significant unmet needs. The Ranking Member underscored Congress’ direct role in authorizing and appropriating funding for OCHA’s pooled funds and called upon OCHA to continue to keep Congress informed on how that money is reaching people on the ground. The two also discussed the urgent need for U.S. leadership and reengagement with other UN humanitarian agencies to ensure that humanitarian responses are comprehensive, needs-based, and capable of stabilizing the dire situations facing the most vulnerable communities worldwide.

Ranking Member Meeks reaffirmed the strong U.S.-Guyana partnership, and congratulated President Ali on the one-year anniversary of his reelection. The Ranking Member underscored steadfast U.S. support for Guyana's territorial integrity against threats to the Essequibo region and commended President Ali's leadership within CARICOM and across the Western Hemisphere. The two discussed ways to elevate the U.S.-Guyana relationship, deepen bilateral cooperation, and advanced shared priorities in the region.

The Ranking Member underscored strong bipartisan support for the U.S.-Philippines alliance in Congress and the United States’ commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines in the South China Sea. The leaders discussed impacts of the war in Iran, as well as the economic and trade relationship between the United States and the Philippines. The Ranking Member thanked the Foreign Minister for the Philippines’ effective chairmanship of ASEAN and its continued cooperation with U.S. allies and partners in the region.

Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week. Ranking Member Meeks welcomed the progress made by President al-Sharaa's government since the repeal of the Caesar Act sanctions and Syria's removal from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list. The Ranking Member further underscored the importance of ensuring religious and ethnic minority communities are protected and fully represented in Syria. The two also discussed regional security challenges, including preventing the resurgence of terror groups.

Ranking Member Meeks underscored 31 years of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations and the enduring friendship between the American and Vietnamese people. The leaders reaffirmed support for the elevation of the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022 and pledged to deepen economic and security cooperation going forward. The discussion also included the importance of protecting human rights and working together to address shared regional challenges.

Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks met with Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi Bawazir, member of the Presidential Leadership Council; Ambassador Jamila Ali Raja, Ambassador to the United States; and other Republic of Yemen officials on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week. Ranking Member Meeks expressed concern over attacks by Houthi militants in Yemen and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and with rising tensions in the region amid the ongoing war in Iran. The leaders discussed how the United States Congress can support Yemen’s government against the Houthis, including through security and humanitarian assistance, and they agreed on the need for revitalized dialogue and diplomacy among the governments of Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the United States to reduce tensions and find a durable solution to the conflict. Ranking Member Meeks reiterated that only a comprehensive political settlement can fully address Yemen’s multi-faceted conflict.
