Nobody needs a podcast to prove that Russia invaded Ukraine unlawfully, or that it is a plague on humanity. That is done. QED, quod erat demonstrandum. The trap is that the speech is built to make you check it. My own first draft of this analysis fell into that trap. It went into the woods to fact-check Putler, paragraph by paragraph, and it came out hypnotised. That is an archetype in its own right. The earnest researcher sets out to check the arch Disinfolklorist on the record, and ends up self-hypnotised by his nonsense. Every Russia expert does this. Every AI does it, unless it’s told not to. You spend hours and millions of tokens checking things that don’t matter. While you’re checking, the voice is doing its work on you. So what do we do instead, in the Disinfolklore universe? ⚡️Now is the time to think about Future Russia. The current Ruschist state dissolves and splinters. It leaves a remnant based around St Petersburg and Moscow. Even then, however, the Russia problem will not have been solved. A state of Moscow and St Petersburg can still be the old empire in a smaller coat. Inside Future Russia, two Russias will argue over the country. The rest of us need to know, from the first day, which one is speaking. One is Historical Russia. The other is Real Russia. The purpose of this is to explain to you the difference. Understanding this difference can help us cut through debates today, rhetoric today, and what I call, in other projects, Disinfolklore today. One is Historical Russia. The other is Real Russia. They cannot share one country. For 30 years, plenty of Russians, plenty of Western experts thought the Russia of the doctrine of Russkiy Mir and the Russia of the map could get along. Indeed, they thought they could even help each other. They cannot. Sooner or later, one devours the other. The Real Russia devours the Historical Russia. Or, as is occurring today, the Historical Russia is devouring itself. The hardest place to separate the Real Russia from the Historical Russia is not on any map. It is inside the head of every Russian. And, indeed, it is inside the heads of those of us who have spent our working lives watching Russia. Regarding Ragozin: "I don’t agree with his views, but…" is doing a lot of work here. There’s a difference between unpopular opinions and endlessly laundering Kremlin/GRU narratives as "journalism". Russian opposition and "independent" Russian journalists don't get this simple fact. If Putin attacked Latvia tomorrow, Ragozin would probably be in the front row explaining why Moscow had "no choice", and why every target was somehow NATO’s fault.

I agree: it is wrong that he is being deported. He should have been investigated, arrested, and trialed.

There is an ancient Circassian saying for violent murder: “pser xetkhyn”—“tear off the soul.” And a curse for the murderers: “yeminem yix”—may the plague take you. I say that curse every time I see what Russia has been doing in Ukraine for the last 12 years.

IMO Why the plague doesn’t work to lure west to normalise relations is that intuitively the reaction would be to avoid a plague situation not get closer to it. Better to ban Russians into Europe than get drawn into Russian tricks.
