India’s defence ecosystem is undergoing a fundamental transformation.A paradigm shift is now underway. A system of de facto product reservation, which created public-sector monopolies such as HAL in military aircraft, BDL in missiles, and MIL in explosives and propellants is now steadily giving way to an increasingly level playing field for private enterprise across each of these domains. The direction is unmistakable and India is moving from nomination to competition, and from public-sector exclusivity to a far more open and competitive defence industrial ecosystem. If we sustain this momentum, India can rapidly move from being one of the world’s largest defence markets to becoming one of its leading defence producers, innovators and exporters.
