Brexit restored one of the biggest freedoms of all; the freedom to hold our lawmakers to account. The power of our votes. The ability, peacefully through the ballot box, to remove those who make our laws and induce change. In essence, democracy. #Brexit #democracy
The EU Commission is unelected but has the sole power to propose EU laws; its Council of Ministers can over-rule member govts now in almost all policy areas; its parliament isn't underpinned by a demos (half the actual word "democracy"); yet, together, these institutions hold legal supremacy over elected govts. The EU is dangerously undemocratic & the inevitable political effects are worsening. #EuropeanUnion #democracy

EU rushing to agree its hugely increased €2 trillion 7-year budget before the French presidential elections next year, to block the frontrunning candidate from having a say over France's contributions and removing a say over the decision from voters. Broken democracy, inside the EU. #France #EuropeanUnion #EU #democracy
Marine Le Pen will cut France’s net annual contribution to the EU’s long-term budget to €5 billion if elected, making the proposal a key part of her political agenda in the presidential election. rapporteur.com/news/le-pen-v…

One of the many Brexit benefits at risk from the so-called UK-EU "reset" (let alone "rejoin") is the push for higher animal welfare standards. The focus below is on the fur trade, but other examples include live animal exports and industrial fishing... labourlist.org/2026/10/spons…

The food organisations quoted by the Rejoiner @FT claim that they want stable regulations, but they won't get stability from dynamic alignment with the EU. The EU has introduced hundreds of new rules for farming, food production and food packaging since we left. Lets stick with UK rules for UK companies! What is a "violation of the principle of sincere co-operation"? Sounds like a wide-ranging licence to suspend an elected government's voting rights for merely disagreeing with an EU position or policy; a further step away from even the EU's weak semblance of democracy. Brexit decision looking ever smarter by the day.
Under a new ‘institutional safeguard’, the EU could suspend a new member’s voting rights in the Council of the EU, following particularly serious cases involving breaches of EU values or violations of the principle of “sincere cooperation” rapporteur.com/news/kos-eu-t…

Brexit delivers both lower import tariffs, holding down prices, and higher customs revenue. Two big benefits of an independent and accountable trade policy, outside the EU.👍 #Brexit #democracy
Also worth noting that, as the UK has struck more trade deals and lowered applied tariffs at the WTO, the UK actually levies *less* customs duties at the border than it did as an EU member. So we have *both* lower tariffs and higher customs revenue, by being outside the EU.

One of the things that you never see mentioned, by those who suggest the UK should be in the EU Customs Union. EU members have to give the EU 75% of all customs duties collected. The UK collected £5 Billion in customs duties in FY 2025/26. Brexit let us keep £3.75 Billion.

I've written an article for @GreatBritishTT The EU's 'Made in Europe' provision is unlawful under WTO rules and is likely a violation of the TCA. Britain should not be bullied by it into making concessions. Link to follow

Good points and questions that the rejoin lobby needs to answer.
Andy Burnham’s Rejoin fantasy, by Wolfgang Munchau (@EuroBriefing) If Burnham asked for my advice today, I would tell him: don’t look at the polls. Don’t worry about ‘Bregret’ or Labour Party politics. Look instead at the state of the EU, which has changed dramatically since 2016. Right now, the EU is not a club you’d want to join. In fact, the sensible Icelanders recently voted against pursuing EU membership. Despite barely surviving the Eurozone’s sovereign debt crisis, the EU never bothered to fix the underlying problems that triggered it, such as a fragmented banking system and the lack of a common capital market. Now another sovereign debt crisis could soon be on the horizon, with French interest rates going through the roof. And if the polls are right about France’s presidential election next year, the political centre might shrink or even disappear as a political force, leaving France and the Eurozone under the influence of the far-Right. Does Britain really want to be in the same club as President Marine Le Pen or Chancellor Alice Weidel? Read more: buff.ly/dzGlE0R

Let’s be clear (as Andy says) about the Euro. The Treaty will oblige us to adopt it. But some countries are given a temporary dispensation by the Council. The Council can end that at any time. So it’s not just our choice. But it gets worse. /1

NEW: The Tory deputy leader has promised to reverse any step Labour takes to move Britain closer to the EU if his party regains power. Alex Burghart says the “reset” in UK–EU relations begun under Starmer and continued by Burnham has been “disastrous” and “extraordinary”. It means the Tories will rip up - Agrifoods agreement - Youth free movement deal - UK’s return to Erasmus - EU’s 12-year UK fishing access - Moves to link carbon trading schemes (All expected to be finalised and confirmed at the summit later this year) Burnham’s reopening of the Brexit debate has raised the question of where the Tories will position themselves Some (eg @George_Osborne) have warned the Tories not to promise to overturn Labour moves as it’ll see the party painted as anti-business at the next election. But the Tory position is now clear: The EU-UK relationship will revert to 2024 position if they win back power. Young people have the biggest stake in democracy, for their futures. 1950s EU political centralisation is only for anti-democrats and other dinosaurs. New members are required to adopt the euro - unclear why you think the EU's own website is lying about this. Below is what happens to rejoin when just the euro and Schengen are factored, nevermind £30bn a year EU budget payments at huge cost to public services, or €800bn of shared debt, or barriers to state aid and public ownership, or new EU taxes. Much more. It's a non-starter. @andyburnham should focus on domestic reforms, as he promised, not provoke years of economic uncertainty.

Andy Burnham under fire for urging a decade of uncertainty and stalled investment, after just six years outside the EU. There is very little support for rejoin under the actual terms of EU membership. #Brexit #Rejoin
Renegotiating membership of the European Union could take well over a decade. A decade which will mean uncertainty for business, stalled investment, and we would inevitably have to accept the Euro and freedom of movement. independent.co.uk/news/uk/po…

With the idea of UK rejoining the EU back on the political agenda the proposed EU budget for 2028 to 2034 becomes of more interest. Brussels is pushing for a €2 trillion budget over these seven years though some, led by Germany, are trying to get that reduced. But on basis of €2 trillion, if the UK was to rejoin before 2034 (unlikely in my view), its gross contribution would be around €35 billion/year (+ whatever re-entry fee was demanded in early years). The net contribution would be less. But the ratio of gross-to-net would be lower than during our previous membership — because this time round there is zero prospect of resurrecting the rebate.

You tell us to do our research but then refer to the Council of Europe, which isn't part of the EU. Ministers in the Council (of Ministers) can be outvoted by others not elected here. Elected governments over-ruled. MEPs only get to vote on laws handed down by the unelected EU Commission. The Commission chooses the legislative agenda, immune from the priorities of, or accountability to, voters. In addition, MEPs are elected on varying national platforms so collectively lack legitimacy to make EU-wide decisions. There is no single EU polity. Democracy requires a demos. It's half the actual word, so hard to just ignore. Just facts. Does any of that sound democratic to you?

How about a poll factoring in other conditions of EU membership, like: 💷 Est £30 billion a year paid into the EU budget, 📈 shared responsibility for €800bn of EU debt, 🚅 blocks on state aid & public ownership, 📈 a raft of new EU taxes, and 🌍 ten candidate countries in the pipeline to join free movement. Opposition to rejoin would grow even further. The idea is a non-starter. So why has @andyburnham reopened division and economic uncertainty? A truly huge gaffe. 🤦‍♂️ @shippersunbound @hoffmann_noa @katyballs @steven_swinford @tony_diver
