"Most people aren't looking to save time, they're looking for ways to spend their time." 9 of 15 consumer internet categories have zero AI products in the Top 100. These built some of the biggest companies of the last two eras: - Streaming - Social - Dating - Gaming - Travel - Retail - Finance - Real estate - Jobs More charts in our Top 100 Consumer AI Apps breakdown: a16z.news/p/top-100-consumer…
The seventh edition of our Top 100 Consumer AI Apps is here. New this time: a revenue leaderboard, alongside the usual web and mobile traffic rankings. Three years ago we published the first edition. ChatGPT was #1, Claude was unranked, and the entire category was chatbots, image generators, and not much else. In today's edition: - ChatGPT still holds the throne, now with 1B+ monthly actives on mobile - Claude has climbed to #3 on web with nearly 1B monthly visits - The category has expanded to vibe coding (Lovable, Cursor, Replit), music (Suno), design (Figma), voice (ElevenLabs), video (Higgsfield, Kling), agents (Manus), and even hardware (Plaud) Full breakdown from @omooretweets: a16z.news/p/top-100-consumer…

Vibecoding isn't falling short because models are bad at code. It's falling short because we're selling a component as a product. Production grade is a property of systems & holistic divergent thinking & architecture, not models. Models don't have the context window for that.
to all the FDEs and more broadly software engineers: I think everyone agrees that vibecoded software by non engineers is still far away from production grade for use at any meaningful scale, but why do you think that is? What concretely is the gap that exists in a world where code generation is good and cheap & there are business-savvy people?

Love that AI has turned a lot of high agency folks with ideas into R & D engineers - > Can I do this with AI? Where is it going wrong? Do I need a better prompt/skill/harness/eval/framework/ruleset/agent brief or completely different approach? How do I fail fast & optimise outcomes? How do I make it once and use it everywhere?

I've decided I agree that AI should be stopped. Its far too easy for me to turn a simple task like writing a resume into a full blown automated customisable intelligence product that results in many days of work and no job applications 😅 (sarcasm folks 😉)

Building with AI and Agents these days feels like building on mobile before react came out. Or containers before K8s... We’ve proved the primitive works. Now we're solving everything required to run it reliably at scale. The problems I've been solving locally - agent coordination (to accelerate build times), model routing (to save $$ and use the right tool), skills (for repeatable work), harnesses (for full flows), delegation, state & context are becoming shared primitives and conventions. In less than 6 months. We're building the AI ecosystem of tomorrow. Love to hear your favourite tools (not just the hyped ones) - bonus points if they're open source!

1/ Everyone asks the wrong question about LLMs in data pipelines, which is almost never "should I use LLMs?" The question is: which stages get determinism guarantees, and which don't?

This is one of the reasons Im bullish that AIs impact will be net good. We're going to see so much more of this type of breakthrough in the next few years with real benefit for human lives playing out. Proud to be supporting some of this work @AdnaNetwork with the passionate @ScienceStanley
Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use. Read more: anthropic.com/news/claude-di…

Nice
When several people talk at once, a transcript can get messy fast. Our new Nemotron 3 Diarization model tracks who spoke when, even when voices overlap. It handles up to eight speakers, has 100M parameters, and is now available on @huggingface 🤗

Andrej Karpathy just gave one of the clearest explanations I’ve heard for how people should be thinking about their Hermes agents. Not one agent. All of them. “Remove yourself as the bottleneck.” That line is much bigger than better prompting. Karpathy is talking about arranging your agents so they can operate with less human intervention, keep work moving longer, and accomplish far more from the relatively small amount of direction you give them. That should be the direction you’re pushing every Hermes agent you build. Your research agent shouldn’t need you to tell it what to search next every five minutes. Your monitoring agent shouldn’t depend on you remembering to check something. Your content agent shouldn’t stop after step one when the rest of the workflow is already known. Your development agent shouldn’t need you sitting there approving every tiny action. That doesn’t mean blindly making everything autonomous. It means deliberately looking at every place where you are still unnecessarily sitting in the loop. Give the agent a clear objective. Give it the tools it needs. Give it the right Skills, memory, files and project context. Define the boundaries. Define what success looks like. Give it a reason to start working, whether that’s a schedule, an event, a recurring task or another agent handing work off to it. Most importantly, define what it can handle itself and what actually requires you. That’s the shift. You’re no longer just building something you can chat with. You’re building an operating workflow that can continue doing useful work after you walk away. Karpathy later puts the goal even more directly: get “more agents running for longer periods of time without your involvement.” That might be one of the best north stars you can use for a serious Hermes setup. Because the number of agents you have means almost nothing by itself. You can have 20 Hermes agents and still personally drive every single action. Or you can have five well-designed agents researching, monitoring, organizing, building and reporting while your attention is somewhere else. So instead of asking: How many Hermes agents can I build? Start asking this about every agent you already have: What am I still doing that this agent could be doing without me? That’s where the leverage starts.

Awesome. I can never keep track of all my agents!
You can now watch your agents work live as Hermes Desktop streams the screen of any bot's screen or session in real time. Watch it drive a browser, type into a terminal, or open a window. Take over anytime to interact with the Bot Screen or type credentials and seamlessly hand back off when you're done.

Hey frens.. who's heading to Token2049 in Singapore this year? It’s been awhile since I’ve headed to a conference - so I’m looking forward to catching up with the community and innovation state. Also looking for my next career move - so if youre hiring in product, agentic engineeing or devrel roles - hmu! Wooo - its event time! 🎉
TOKEN2049 Singapore is just two weeks away. The biggest names in crypto take the stage at Marina Bay Sands. Less than 48 hours to lock in US$599, before the final price increase on 23 September.
