This is the one miniseries I feel everyone (yes, everyone) should watch at least once. It has one of the finest casts ever assembled on television, a flawless script, and Firth & Ehle are both utterly luminous. A perfect adaptation of a perfect book.

When The Last Witness To The Old Britain Dies, Remember It Was Planned Somewhere in the next forty or fifty years, an old man or woman will die in Britain, and almost nobody will notice the significance. No flag will come down. No minister will mark it. Another thread joining modern Britain to the country it once was will simply sever. What should trouble us is not just that it happens, but that it was foreseen, calculated and pursued as policy long before that person was born. That generation was raised by people who lived through WWII and remembered a Britain before the demographic change of the past fifty years. Their parents knew ration books, the Blitz and men coming home from war. Christianity still shaped the country's laws, customs and language, even for the millions who rarely set foot in a church. Britain had changed before, but most people understood roughly what inheritance they had been born into, and no government had set out deliberately to replace it. The numbers now are not the product of drift. In England and Wales, the White British share of the population fell from 87.5 per cent in 2001 to 74.4 per cent in 2021. Christian identification fell from 59.3 per cent to 46.2 per cent over the same decade. These are census results, and they track almost exactly onto a policy direction that governments have pursued, revised and expanded for a quarter of a century, under different parties, without ever putting the destination to the electorate. Demographic research by Oxford's David Coleman and, more recently, Matthew Goodwin points broadly in the same direction: a steep decline in the White British share this century, with Goodwin projecting it below half around 2063. Projections are not prophecies. But when governments of different colours pursue policies for decades despite increasingly visible demographic consequences, the outcome becomes harder to dismiss as an unforeseen accident. Britain is changing on a scale never plainly put before the electorate. The mechanism is not hidden. Britain's birth rate has fallen and its population is ageing. The Office for National Statistics expects deaths to outnumber births from 2026 onwards, with all projected population growth for the following decade coming from net migration rather than births. Faced with that arithmetic, successive governments chose immigration as the solution rather than the problem, and built the entire architecture of the state, visa routes, university funding models, social care staffing, around that choice. A demographic gap does not fill itself. Someone decided how it would be filled, and by whom. None of this is about skin colour. A child born here to immigrant parents can hold Britain's institutions, its laws and its history as firmly as anyone whose family has lived here for centuries, if they are given the chance to inherit them rather than taught to see them as something to apologise for. A country that plans its own demographic replacement while telling its citizens each decision is unconnected to the last wants silence about the pattern, not integration into it. Nobody put that choice to the country directly. No government stood before voters and asked whether they wanted change on this scale, over this timescale, for their grandchildren to inherit. An omission of such gravity repeated for twenty-five years, by governments of every colour, is not an oversight. It is the method. Britain in 2070 will keep its name. The flag will still fly over Westminster. But a country whose population was remade by design, without its consent, cannot simply carry on calling itself the same country. One day the last person who remembers the old Britain will die. What will remain is the paper trail: decades of decisions, all pointing one way, made by people who knew where they led. Matthew McDonagh, 57, lost his job at Hovis Belfast after more than 20 years’ service following an incident on 19th February 2026. Matthew recorded two Muslim colleagues praying in a changing room in a show of blatant disrespect for their host nation, after saying they were blocking access to his locker. He filmed the incident for his own protection and as evidence, and he remained calm and did not threaten or intimidate anyone. Hovis terminated his employment on 27th May. Matthew had no previous disciplinary record. He is now raising £4,000 towards legal action. He rejected a settlement agreement which would have restricted him from speaking publicly about the dispute. So far, £3,675 has been raised.
