Scouting Advice on Evaluating NBA Draft Prospects "Build your intuition for what a good prospect looks like... Players fail in the NBA for lacking skills where there's an identical player who succeeded – you have to find what made somebody lose. You are actually trying to cut off the bottom before you try to predict the top" – @NileHoops 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 from @beyondtheRK

I think the answer to the question of “how does x team stay lucky with 3pt defense” is we should consider closeout *threat* in the same way you can space just with the threat of shooting. Some teams close out so fast that the shooter feels always at risk of being contested.

Of the 14 most recent players who measured <=175 pounds at the Combine, Tyler Tanner had: - The most dunks, 3.8x median - The most rim attempts, 2.0x median - The highest free throw rate, 1.7x median Remains one of the most fascinating prospects I’ve scouted.
Small guards are an endangered species in today's NBA. Tyler Tanner and Chance Mallory are here to prove they're not extinct. New at Swish Theory! A collaboration between @AtTheLevel and @MaxiMonster111. ⬇️ READ BELOW ⬇️

I always appreciate people going deep on their unique scouting process, and Charlie has hit on something great here (with results to back it up). Check it out!
How can we tell bench players from future starters? @klaytheist11 breaks down his pro scouting philosophy, built on two pillars: how a player's role can scale up, and how it can transform entirely. Read below! 👇

First version of the 2027 NBA Draft Consensus Board. I’ll try to share this monthly, as people send in and update their boards throughout the draft cycle.

The more I do this the more I appreciate using all three (though foundational is my favorite when projecting far into the future). The important part is being clear with and aware of which method you are using.

There are at least three primary types of scouting: 1. “Foundational”: does a prospect have the underlying traits which lead to future success? 2. “Descriptive”: does what they do on the court equate to winning? 3. “Indicator”: do they display specific cues for future success?

Learning to lead into space and pass over top is so valuable. In addition to just basic footwork precision
The soccer to point guard pipeline is so intriguing to me The similarities in the triangles and runs/cuts during the run of play across soccer and basketball make it genuinely applicable across both sports And that’s just reading the game not even getting into footwork

Related, this look into Montana State WBB’s elite defense through intense pressure and gambling from @SkimMilkey today was great: basketunderreview.com/99th-p…
Gambling on steals is, at best, frowned upon and, at worst, completely misconstrued. Like the 3-point revolution, I think it could be the easiest way to get an advantage over your opponents by pushing the pace, improving defense, and even influencing NBA outcomes. Link below!
