I've just made my last first-round editorial decision at RIO. Here are some thoughts on what I've learned and the publication process more broadly: linkedin.com/pulse/what-20-y…
New RIO (@The_PEIO) editor: Christopher Kilby
After more than 20 years as editor of the Review of International Organizations, I'm stepping back from new submissions.
As of today, Christopher will take over. I will continue with resubmissions for papers I originally handled.
I recently talked with Sebastian Spiller of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about why I am unconvinced by the claim that “every euro spent on German development cooperation increases German exports by €2.50.” My thoughts on this can be found here: linkedin.com/feed/update/urn…

On World Humanitarian Day, I joined hr2-kultur's "Der Tag" to discuss the state of humanitarian aid in Gaza. Contrary to what people seem to think, I'm clearly in favor of humanitarian aid...

Who should decide how development aid is spent?
I spoke with Das Parlament about the GIZ and German development cooperation. My main point: in democratic partner countries, governments should have much more say over priorities and projects.

Do higher oil prices fuel conflict?
New column with Maximilian Herrmann and Jingke Pan: organized violence moves toward oil locations and away from nearby areas, while protests spread outward. Aggregation can hide the resource curse:

5/4 Thanks to the many colleagues who have made this possible, on the editorial board and in other functions: Co- and Associate Editors Helen Milner, James Vreeland, Todd Sandler, and Roland Vaubel above all.
6/4 Thanks to the reviewers who gave their time, care, and expertise. Some of you I persuaded over coffee, some over beer, and some by more shameless forms of editorial coercion. I learned a great deal from your reports, and the journal is much better because of them. Thank you!
Congratulations to Erasmus Kersting, PhD, Christopher Kilby, PhD, and Santiago Foncillas VSB ’24 for the publication of their paper, “Dirty Work and the Domestic Politics of Aid,” in Cambridge University Press’ International Organization journal! cup.org/4voddVQ
What happens when Wagner enters African conflict zones?
New GODAD paper by @lilleberlin and Lev Lvovskiy: Western bilateral donors retreat, while the World Bank initially reengages – more projects and disbursements. After 2022, that WB premium declines.

What happened after the USAID shutdown?
New GODAD working paper by Marcella Nicolini & Fabio Sabatini: exposed African regions saw falling nightlights and rising acute food insecurity, especially where vulnerability was high and institutions weaker.

The impact of the USAID shutdown on Africa, as seen from space and on the ground.
M. Nicolini and I study the effects of the aid cuts by linking GODAD data on USAID projects to satellite-based measures of economic activity and IPC food insecurity indicators.
